🌿 What Is Smudging and How to Use Sage Safely

Smudging is an ancient spiritual practice used for cleansing energy, setting intentions, and restoring harmony to your space. Rooted in Indigenous and global traditions, it involves burning sacred herbs, most commonly white sage to purify environments, objects, or your own aura.

At Luna & Sage, we honour this ritual with intention and reverence, offering ethically sourced sage and smudge tools to support your personal spiritual journey.

What Is Smudging?

Smudging is a sacred smoke ritual where you gently burn bundles of herbs (often sage, palo santo, or sweetgrass) to invite positive energy while releasing the negative. The act is deeply symbolic - like giving your space a spiritual reset.

Many people use smudging to:

  • Cleanse a home or room of stagnant or negative energy
  • Prepare a space before meditation or ritual
  • Ground themselves after emotional stress or tension
  • Energetically clear objects like crystals, tarot cards, or gifts

Why Use Sage?

White sage is the most commonly used herb for smudging due to its strong cleansing and antimicrobial properties. It’s known for its crisp, earthy scent and is often associated with protection and purification.

At Luna & Sage, our sage bundles are:

  • Sustainably and respectfully harvested
  • Hand-wrapped with care
  • Beautifully paired with crystals or flowers for extra energetic intention

How to Smudge Safely

If you’re new to smudging, follow these steps for a safe and sacred experience:

  1. Open a window or door – Always allow negative energy and smoke to escape. Ventilation is important.
  2. Light the sage bundle – Hold the end of the bundle over a flame until it catches, then gently blow out the flame so the herbs smoulder.
  3. Set your intention – Pause to focus your mind. What are you releasing? What are you inviting in?
  4. Move through the space – Slowly walk through your space, guiding the smoke with a feather or your hand. Pay attention to doorways, corners, and mirrors.
  5. Extinguish the bundle – Press the lit end into a fireproof dish or sand until the smoke stops. Never leave it burning unattended.

✨ Bonus: Try using a ceramic smudge bowl or trinket dish from our collection for your ritual.
